The Winnfield beard – how to style this Pulp Fiction classic

Winnfield beard, a facial hair style

Made popular by Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction, the Winnfield beard consists of a horseshoe mustache with thick sideburns. The sideburns and mustache are two separate entities and do not touch.

The Winnfield beard is a very distinctive style and is not for the faint hearted. A man who sports a Winnfield beard has usually experimented with Mutton Chop beards before and is now ready to take it to the next level.

This facial hair is essentially an iconic combination of mutton chops and a horseshoe mustache. If you love to stand out in a crowd, then this beard may be for you. The eccentricity of this beard means it suits a range of face shapes but looks particularly good on diamond shaped faces.

Growing the Winnfield beard

As with most facial hair styles, the starting point is to grow out a full beard. This should take around 6 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows. If you struggle to grow out a full thick beard, there are things you can do to improve the rate of growth.

Contrary to popular belief, shaving does not make the hair grow back thicker and faster. Staying hydrated, exercising and a healthy diet made up of plenty of protein will however help hair growth and speed up your path to the full beard.

Once your full beard has grown, it is time to start trimming and shaving. Begin by removing any hair on the neck, right up to the jawline.

Grooming a Winnfield beard

You will also need to remove the hair from your chin, to create the horseshoe mustache shape. Imagine a line down from either side of your mouth to the bottom of your chin. Everything between these lines should be shaved, except for a soul patch. The soul patch is optional, but we think it looks great with the Winnfield beard.

Shave the cheek areas keeping a divide between your horseshoe mustache and the mutton chops. Use your razor to clearly define the outline of the mustache and mutton chops, removing any stray hairs from the cheeks.

Next, use your trimmer to trim the remaining hair to the desired length. The trimming process can be difficult to navigate initially, as it is the sides of your beard that give the length to the horseshoe mustache. Trim in small increments as this will give you more control over the process and reduce the risk of you making a mistake.

Winnfield beard upkeep

If you choose to keep the hair shorter, applying a drop of oil and rubbing through the ends of the hair will be sufficient. However, if you prefer longer facial hair, we recommend opting for a beard balm. A beard balm will give you reassurance that your facial hair is going to stay in place all day, without it looking over styled or greasy. Because this facial hair is made up of a few components, keeping it regularly trimmed and shaved is essential. Ensure you cleanse your face before each shave and moisturize thoroughly afterwards to keep your skin in optimal condition.
